WI Women in Art: Jenie Gao
Friday, March 11, 2011Saturday, January 22nd. Gallery Day was pretty quiet, with the intermittent visitor asking a few questions and wandering on to other galleries throughout the building. Enter Jenie Gao. She was interesting and charismatic and I could tell right away that her work was the kind with meaning and background. I was right. After talking with her and viewing her website, she was invited to be a part of the Women in Art Show in the Marshall Building last weekend. Her work showed beautifully:
Her woodcut series, "Keeping", "Pink Baby", and "The Last Day I Saw My Dad Alive" (respective to the hanging order left to right) are as intimate as they are strikingly bold. This juxtaposition between the inner meaning and the first impression is what makes Jenie Gao an Artist Worth Checking Out to me. Her attention to detail and harsh, dramatic use of line make her work intriguing.
